Chowrasia at tied 8th

Torino: Playing flawless golf, SSP Chowrasia brought in a six-under 66 to go up from tied 44th to tied eighth at the end of the third round of the 71st Italian Open. Shiv Kapur (68) also moved to tied 33rd at 6-under 210. Hennie Otto of South Africa pulled two strokes ahead after three rounds. Otto posted a one under 71 to move to 16-under and into two shot lead over Scotland’s Richie Ramsay in second spot.

Two share lead

Norton: Jason Day continued his form to tie Ryan Palmer for the lead after the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. They finished level at eight-under 134, one stroke ahead of Americans Matt Kuchar (66) and Billy Horschel (66) on a tightly bunched leader board.

AC Milan win

Milan: Goalkeeper Diego Lopez made an inspired debut for AC Milan as he helped them beat Lazio 3-1 in their first competitive game under new coach Filippo Inzaghi on Sunday. Milan raced into a 3-0 lead in little more than an hour with goals from Keisuke Honda, Sulley Muntari and a Jeremy Menez penalty.

Deal done

Milan: AC Milan has completed the signing of Fernando Torres on a loan deal from Chelsea. In a statement on Sunday, Milan confirmed it has signed Torres on a two-year loan deal.

Hockey schedule

New Delhi: India men will face Sri Lanka in their tournament opener while the eves will be up against Thailand in their first hockey match at the Asian Games. Indian men’s hockey team will start the campaign on September 21 while the eves will play their first match the next day.

Kagawa back

Dortmund: Borussia Dortmund re-signed Shinji Kagawa from Manchester United on Sunday to end the Japan midfielder’s two-year spell in the Premier League.

Chess tourney

Calcutta: Rupankar Nath was declared champion of the Shankar Roy Memorial Rapid Rating Chess tournament, organised by the Alekhine Chess Club, at Gorky Sadan. He clinched the top position via tie-breaker after being one of the three players to score seven points out of a possible eight. Arpan Das and IM Sayantan Das finished second and third, respectively.

Snooker meet

Calcutta: Manish Jain will face Arshad Zama in the final of the State Ranking Snooker Championship, at the Calcutta Swimming Club, on Monday. In Sunday’s semi-finals, both Manish and Arshad registered 4-0 victories over Ankit Kariwala and Amir Hussein, respectively.
