Plan to move SC to nudge state govt

Aug. 29: Two lawyers who had filed a PIL during whose hearing the Supreme Court had ordered a CBI probe into the Saradha scam are preparing to seek the apex courtís directive to the Bengal government to cooperate with the agency.

Advocate Subhashish Bhowmick, who will appear for lawyers Pratim Kumar Singha Ray and Abu Abbasuddin, said today that a writ petition seeking the directive would be filed shortly as the ďstate government is not co-operating with the CBI by furnishing all necessary and relevant materialsĒ.

Bengal police had earlier been accused of not co-operating with the CBI even after the Supreme Court handed over the Saradha probe to the central agency. The CBI had to issue an ultimatum before Bengal police handed over key documents. Yesterday, chief minister Mamata Banerjee assured the CBI of all help.

The CBI today questioned Bapi Karim, the former confidential assistant of minister Madan Mitra, for the second time. According to sources, Karim told the sleuths that he knew only one politician, Mitra. He denied any link with top Saradha officials.

Alipore court today remanded East Bengal official Debabrata Sarkar in judicial custody till September 10. He had been in the CBIís custody in connection with the Saradha case.

Assam-based singer Sadananda Gogoi was flown to Calcutta today by the CBI for questioning. He could be questioned tomorrow, sources said. The CBI had searched his home in Guwahati yesterday.
