Tortured on theft charge

Tamluk, Aug. 28: A young mother who has to beg to raise her 13-year-old daughter was tied to an electricity post for seven hours, tonsured and beaten up after being accused of stealing a utensil by a group of East Midnapore villagers yesterday.

The 32-year-old woman, whose daughter studies in Class V, was released only after her elderly mother assured the villagers that she and would help find the utensil.

The 32-year-old woman, whose husband has been missing for the past 10 years, today lodged an FIR against farmer Buddhadeb Maity, a resident of Amritberia village in Mahishadal whose bell metal plate was allegedly stolen, and others. The accused are absconding, the police said.

“They accused me of posing as a beggar to steal utensils. They tied me to an electric post with ropes and beat me up with wooden sticks. They pulled at my sari and molested me before cutting my hair,” the woman told the police.

The woman, a resident of a village 3km from Amritberia, had gone there yesterday to seek alms. “The torture continued till the evening. My mother got to hear of all this from our neighbours and came rushing. She somehow managed to rescue me,” the woman said.

She was taken to the Basulia health centre with injuries all over her body. She was discharged after being given first aid.
