Acid curbs reviewed

Calcutta police on Wednesday discussed possible ways to implement acid attack guidelines prescribed by the Supreme Court after a man allegedly threw an acidic liquid at his wife the day before.

The woman was admitted to hospital with severe burns. The incident prompted the police brass to meet at Lalbazar “for a way to curb the menace before it goes out of control”.

The apex court guidelines accord priority to restrictions on the sale and preservation of acids to prevent their misuse. States are supposed to formulate their own policies to restrict the sale of acids.

Calcutta police has no mechanism to monitor the sale and storage of acids in the city.
