Assam book semis berth

Guwahati, Aug. 25: Assam stormed into the semi-finals of the Buchi Babu Trophy invitation cricket tournament for the first time, defeating Kerala by 98 runs in the quarter-finals at VB Nest Cricket Academy ground in Chennai today.

Put to bat first, Assam yesterday posted 262 all out in 82 overs and Kerala today resumed at overnight 45 for four to be bowled out for 164 in 65.3 overs.

The Assam spin tandem of Syed Mohammad and Swarupam Purkayastha ripped apart the Kerala batting order with hauls of three wickets each to make short work of the innings. Barring the seasoned batsman Sachin Baby, who remained unbeaten on 59 (3x4), only Jafar Jamal (36, 5x4, 1x6) could last long today.

Rohan Prem (13, 2x4), Sachin Mohan (11, 1x4) and Fabid Faruqe (10, 1x4) were the other batsmen to score in double figures.

Syed returned with the figures of three for 49 and Swarupam scalped three for 46. Left arm spinner Pushparaj Sharma also chipped in with two for 13.

Assam will play Hyderabad in the semi-final on Wednesday and Thursday.

Umesh Gogoi football: Barekuri Coaching Centre, Tinsukia, today handed a 4-0 thrashing to Chabua Coaching Centre in the second Umesh Gogoi football tournament at Lahoal Rural Stadium near here. With this win, Barekuri Coaching Centre have sealed a place in the semi-finals. The first goal for Barekuri came in third minute through striker Sonamoni Singh. Fellow forward Newsom Kom struck 10 minutes later to enhance the lead. The third goal came from Porepion in the 30th minute. Sonamoni Singh struck again in the 55th minute.

Under-19 girls’ soccer: Jorhat edged past Titabar 3-2 via tiebreakers in the 12th under-19 girls’ inter-district football tournament, organised by Doomdooma Sports Association at the Doomdooma Town Field in Tinsukia district today. The match was a goalless draw in regulation time.
