Athlete gets Phani Sharma award

Guwahati, Aug. 24: Athlete Nibedita Barman was conferred the Dr Phani Sharma Commemorative Talent Award for Sports in a function here yesterday.

The young athlete was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a citation by chief minister Tarun Gogoi. Zakir Hussain, the coach of the budding athlete, was also felicitated on the occasion.

The biennial award was initiated by the Dr Phani Sharma Welfare Trust to motivate promising and talented sportspersons of the state.

Earlier, paddler Kakoli Lahkar in 2008, footballer Alen Deori in 2010 and pugilist Pwilao Basumatary (2012) have been conferred the award.

Also present on the occasion were K.P. Singh Deo, former Union minister and chef de mission of Seoul Olympics, Robin Bordoloi, chairman of GMDA and Dwijen Sharma, chairman of housing board, among others.
