Shooter honour after poll code

State art, culture and youth affairs minister Vinay Bihari finally met chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Thursday to discuss shooter Shreyasi Singh’s felicitation.

The girl from Jamui district — she is former Union minister late Digvijay Singh’s daughter — made the state proud by striking silver in double trap at the XXth Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 27. But the state is yet to felicitate her.

On Sunday, Bihari said they were busy campaigning for the bypolls. A day later he said he was supposed to meet the chief minister to discuss Shreyasi’s felicitation but could not because of incessant rains. This, when he lives just 1.5km from the chief minister’s house and is entitled to two chauffer-driven four-wheelers, one of them an SUV.

The tale of indifference did not end there. The government then decided to felicitate her at a state ceremony but picked a date (August 29) when she was due in Italy to train for the World Shooting Championship in Spain.

“Last evening, I got a chance to meet the chief minister. However, I couldn’t discuss Shreyasi in detail. Four-five ministers had come to meet him. There were some other points my department had to discuss. About Shreyasi, the chief minister gave his nod and asked us to go ahead and plan things,” he said.

“Bypolls are over but the model code of conduct is on till August 25. We will not work in haste as Shreyasi is in Italy. The government will contact her and set a date. The announcement will come after August 25. We want to give her a cash prize but the amount is not decided. We’ve rewarded players from other states handsomely. She is from Bihar, we’ll honour her impressively,” he said.
