Militant who fled rearrested

Tura, Aug. 19: Jiten Lyngdoh, a member of the A’chik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) who had managed to escape yesterday, was caught today by villagers at Niyapali, near Damas in the North Garo Hills, along the Assam-Meghalaya border, about 140km from Tura.

Lyngdoh and the outfit’s self-styled chairman, William A. Sangma, escaped from Mendipathar police lock-up yesterday. Both the militants were arrested by Assam police from Agia in Goalpara district on Saturday and handed over to their Meghalaya counterparts.

Lyngdoh was arrested when he was trying to escape through the village, after Assam and Meghalaya police sent out an alert for his capture. He was caught around 12.30 this afternoon, beaten up and handed over to the police in the North Garo Hills.

“We had sounded an alert and had spoken to all village sordars and nokmas to help get these two militants back in custody. We have managed to get back Lyngdoh and hopefully we will be able to get back the other one as well,” said Jerry Marak, the superintendent of police, North Garo Hills.

“We have some inputs on the whereabouts of William and our team is on the lookout. He is said to be injured and some people have spotted him. Our search is on and we hope to get him soon,” Marak added.

Lyngdoh and William escaped after the sentry on duty did not take precautions and left the lock-up open. The sentry on duty, Jajeng Marak, has been arrested for negligence and criminal conspiracy.

The duo had confessed to their involvement in the abduction of Saumendu Chakraborty, who was kidnapped at gunpoint from Baromile, near Tura last month.
