Anubrata aide shot dead

Aug. 16: A Trinamul Congress leader said to be close to Birbhum party chief Anubrata Mondal was shot dead tonight in what is being seen as the fallout of faction rivalry.

Ashok Mukhopadhyay, who was named in an FIR in the murder of a Trinamul leader in 2013, was shot seven times by five motorbike-borne men as he sipped tea at a stall tonight in a local fruit market.

Mondal said he did not know who were behind the murder. “I don’t know who murdered Mukhopadhyay. We are looking into it,” he said.

Mukhopadhyay, 50, had not taken along the two constables assigned to him last year after the murder of Ashok Ghosh, whom he had replaced as Khoirashole block Trinamul president. Trinamul had requested the police for the protection fearing Mukhopadhyay could be attacked by Ghosh’s loyalists, sources said.

Birbhum police superintendent Alok Rajoria said a probe had been started. “We are yet to find out the reason behind the murder,” he said.

Ghosh’s son said he did not know who were behind the murder.

‘Syndicate’ clash

Two suspected Trinamul factions clashed in Rajarhat yesterday, with sources saying it could be the fallout of a rivalry over control of construction materials syndicates in the area. Four persons were hospitalised and six were arrested.
