Tsonga ousted

Cincinnati: World No. 1 Novak Djokovic got past Gilles Simon 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the Western and Southern Open second round on Tuesday, but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga lost 1-6, 4-6 to Mikhail Youzhny in his opener two days after winning the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

In men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi suffered a first round 5-7, 2-6 loss to Vasek Pospisil of Canada and Jack Sock of the USA.

In women’s singles, Venus Williams failed to sustain the momentum from her run to last week’s Montreal final and ran out of gas as she fell 7-6 (2), 3-6, 4-6 to 16th seed Lucie Safarova in the first round.

Maria Sharapova defeated Madison Keys 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
