Letter foils IFA plans

Calcutta: A letter from the union health ministry to the Dum Dum Central Jail jettisoned Indian Football Association’s plan to bring 25 inmates for Saturday’s blood donation camp.

The day is observed as Football Lovers’ Day, jointly by the IFA and Association of Voluntary Blood Donors, in memory of the 16 fans killed during an East Bengal versus Mohun Bagan Derby match, on August 16, 1980.

“I was told by the jail authorities that they got a letter from Adhir Sharma, Addl. DG & Inspector General of Correctional Services West Bengal, that as per guidelines of the union health ministry, jail inmates cannot donate blood,” an IFA official said.
