83-year-old commits suicide

An 83-year-old man, who owned several hotels in the city, committed suicide after coming to know that he was terminally ill, said police.

The body of Munshi Singh, who had been suffering from cancer, was found near Bagbazar Ghat on Friday.

On Thursday, the businessman, a resident of 38A Nandan Road in Bhowanipore, had quietly driven out of his house to Vidyasagar Setu and plunged into the Hooghly.

“Singh was under treatment for many years. Last week he found some reports that suggested he was terminally ill — an information his sons had kept from him,” an officer said.

Duo held

Samad Mollah and Samsuddin Mollah, alleged associates of former Bhangar MLA Arabul Islam, were arrested from Kashipur for threatening to kill a man over a land dispute on Friday. A gun and two cartridges were seized from them. Later, Arabul visited the Kashipur police station to enquire about the duo.

Robbers arrested

Police foiled a robbery attempt and held seven armed men in Salt Lake GD Block early on Friday.
