Calcutta: Aryan Club have always been regarded as giant-killers in the local football circuit. On Thursday, they registered an achievement that got their name etched in history of Calcutta football.
Hammering 14 goals past a hapless Kalighat Club, Aryan established a Calcutta Football League record. The result also ensured their qualification to the Championship Round of the competition.
It certainly couldn’t have been a better way to guarantee themselves a berth alongside the big names of the city.
Sumon Malo and Nigerian Stanley Ifeanyi Eze fired four goals apiece, while Sagar Das, Mithun Saha and Shubhashish Das scored twice each, as Aryan literally toyed with Kalighat in Thursday’s Premier Division tie, at the Barasat Stadium.
Coach Raghu Nandy, expectedly, was elated with the performance of his wards. In the past, he has guided his men to stunning victories over illustrious opponents. But this was really a special gift from his players. “Truly, I do treasure it… Boys were simply terrific… Couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Nandy, also Aryan’s football secretary, said on Thursday.
It was only the other day when Kalighat were thrashed 9-0 by Peerless SC. But that doesn’t take the sheen off Aryan’s scintillating victory, Nandy reminded.
“Yes, Kalighat have been smashed time and again this season. Frankly speaking, the team is in doldrums. But that said, you cannot belittle the wonderful show from our players.
“It’s not a matter of joke scoring as many as 14 goals. Kalighat’s present state did make things a bit easy for us, but they too were spot-on with their job. We had to win this game by a seven-goal margin to qualify for the CFL Championship Round. And our players made it 14! The performance speaks for itself,” he said.
The wily coach was effusive in his praise for Stanley. “Having seen him score six goals in the last five matches for BNR last season, I brought him here. You can see his performance.
