Rebel flees from govt hospital

Tura, Aug. 6: An undertrial prisoner, Bishnu M. Sangma, today escaped from a government hospital in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills. He was in judicial custody in Williamnagar district jail.

Bishnu, a suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre, was arrested during an operation against the outfit at Mikilsimgre village, about 19km from Williamnagar, on June 23.

East Garo Hills superintendent of police Davies Marak said, “The prisoner had gone to the toilet but when he failed to come out even after 20 minutes, the guard grew suspicious and broke open the door only to find the toilet empty.”

He said the militant had escaped through the ventilator. The incident took place around 3am.

“We have ordered an inquiry into the incident and the role of the eight police personnel who were deputed at the hospital,” Marak said.

The cadre was not handcuffed, which is a not permitted according to the latest Supreme Court ruling on undertrials, who are on medication at a hospital.

Bishnu is a close aide of the GNLA’s East Garo Hills area commander Ajan Momin alias Jimmy.

On June 23, Rex Miller R. Sangma, an undertrial United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) cadre, escaped from Tura civil hospital. Rex was arrested on June 18 from Kharkutta in North Garo Hills. Seven constables were suspended after the incident.
