8-year-old beheaded, finger at father

Srinagar, Aug. 3: Shock and rage gripped a village in Poonch district of Jammu after an eight-year-old girl was found beheaded today, with police suspecting the involvement of her father in the murder.

The child was identified as Musarrat Naaz. The police said her father and some other people had been picked up for questioning.

Sub-divisional police officer Surinder Chowdhary said the decapitated body was found very close to her home in Dharna village of Mendhar in Poonch. The head was found several feet away.

“It is too early to say (who is involved) but most likely it appears that he (the father) is involved.... We are nevertheless questioning some other people,” the officer said.

Chowdhary claimed that there was some dispute within the family and that the father had killed his daughter to implicate a close relative.

Often, he “would say openly (to the relatives) that ‘I will kill one of my kids and that will be on your name… so that all of you land in jail’,” the officer said. It was not clear if the police have any evidence against the father other than this.

Mendhar is where an Indian soldier was beheaded by Pakistani troopers during a cross-border raid last year that had triggered outrage across the country.
