New Delhi, Aug. 3: French car major Renault is planning to bring in the Lodgy multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in the next eight to 10 months.
The development comes close on the heels of the launch of the Mobilio by Honda.
Sources said the Lodgy would be available in both the petrol and diesel variants.
Analysts said the Lodgy was slightly bigger than the Mobilio and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
According to sources, the company will launch a number of vehicles in different categories, including sedans, sports utility vehicles and small cars.
Honda Cars India Limited has recently launched the petrol variant of the seven-seater Mobilio priced at Rs 6.49 lakh and Rs 8.76 lakh.
The diesel versions come with a price tag of Rs 7.89-10.86 lakh. The Ertiga costs between Rs 5.8 lakh to Rs 8.49 lakh.
According to industry sources, Maruti has started giving discounts of as much as Rs 70,000 on the Ertiga to take on the newest entrant from the Honda fold.
Honda Motor Company managing officer Yoshiyuki Matsumoto said India remained one of the key markets, and the Mobilio would contribute significantly to the company’s growth.
“The Mobilio is already a success in Indonesia, selling 46,000 units since its launch in January, capturing a 23 per cent market share in the segment. We expect the same success in India and will try to sell as many units as we can here,” Matsumoto said.
Renault sells the SUV Duster, mid-segment sedan Scala and hatchback Pulse in the country.
The company has sold around one lakh units of the Duster in India in the last two years.
Meanwhile, German premium car maker Mercedes-Benz has reported a 25 per cent growth in sales for the first half of 2014 in India at 4,717 units.
The flagship S-Class sedan, the ML-Class SUV and the new models comprising the A-Class and B-Class were significant contributor to this growth, the company said in a statement.
