Man gets 10 years’ RI for rape

Jorhat: July 31: Assistant district and sessions judge Khagen Dohotia today sentenced Babu Phukan alias Rajib, 23, of Lahing Tarajan Gaon under Teok police station in the district to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment for raping a mentally challenged girl of the same village in 2011.

Rajib was also fined Rs 4,000 which if he fails to pay, would entail another six months of simple imprisonment.

The girl, who was about 18 years when the crime was committed three years ago, was found to be pregnant by her family and a case was registered at Teok police station on January 5, 2011, on the basis of a complaint filed by her elder brother.

The police arrested the man and registered a case (no. 6/11) under Section 376 IPC.

Rajib allegedly lured the girl with a promise of marriage, clothes and jewellery.

Dipak Nath, alias Dipankar Kachari, who claims to be an Ulfa cadre who had surrendered in 2007, was arrested at Kathonibari in the Majuli subdivision of the district today on charges of attempting to extort money in the name of Ulfa.

A case has been registered at Pulibor station here in this connection.

AJYCP protest: The AJYCP here staged a protest and burnt the effigy of chief minister Tarun Gogoi in protest against the government not being able to contain Japanese encephalitis and acute encephalitis syndrome because of which almost 100 people have died in the state in the past few months.
