Abducted teacher released

Shillong, July 27: A teacher, who was allegedly kidnapped yesterday in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district from Balmagre village, was released today while police managed to arrest four persons, including the wife of the prime accused, behind the incident.

Yesterday, Meghalaya police constable Abhijit Mazumdar, 28, and his friend Soumendro Chakraborty, who is a teacher, were on a motorbike when unidentified gunmen, travelling in a car, intercepted them at 7th Mile on the outskirts of Tura. The incident took place between 11.30am and 12.30pm.

Five unidentified gunmen stopped the duo and tried to kidnap Chakraborty and Mazumdar intervened. Mazumdar sustained a bullet injury and was rushed to Tura civil hospital. The goons, however, managed to abduct Chakraborty.

The police constable, a commando of the 5th Meghalaya Battalion, was on leave and was travelling with his friend to his native village in Barengapara, near Dalu, along the India-Bangladesh border. However, this evening, the police arrested Misbell R. Marak, 23, wife of prime accused William S. Sangma, police sources said.

Along with Misbell, the police arrested Tulip Marak, Nikseng Momin, Simseng Marak from Balmagre village, which is a little ahead of 7th Mile, for sheltering and helping the kidnappers, the sources added. While Chakraborty was released, the police also recovered the Maruti car, which was used by the kidnappers, and the bike, which the duo had travelled on.
