‘Medal is for the nation’

New Delhi: For 25-year-old weightlifter Sukhen Dey, winning the gold medal in the 58kg category in Glasgow was a personal redemption. Banned and humiliated for failing a dope test four years ago, the Howrah lifter was determined to make a comeback in the sport.

“It is the restoration of my prestige that made me happy more than the gold medal,” Sukhen said from Glasgow, where he lifted 248 kg in total to bag the gold. “There was a time when I felt that it would be impossible to return to the sport. But my employers (Services), and the coaches supported me during my bad days and here I am back on the podium.

“This medal is for the nation, coaches and the federation. I am grateful for their support,” he said. The Andul-born boy was a success in the previous Commonwealth Games in New Delhi as he bagged a silver medal.
