Holly Deity set to reprise Bolly Kahaani

Vidya Balan in Kahaani

Kahaani is back, and it’s going places.

Two years after the Sujoy Ghosh film put Calcutta on the Bollywood map, Kahaani is set to be remade in English as Deity. And Calcutta is once again the chosen backdrop for one woman’s tale of revenge and retribution.

To be produced by YRF Entertainment, the international production arm of Yash Raj Films headed by actor-producer Uday Chopra, Deity will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev, the man behind the 2009 Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

In the autumn of 2010, Ghosh and his cast and crew had parked themselves in Calcutta for months to film Kahaani. The 2012 thriller entirely set in and shot in Calcutta had leading lady Vidya Balan playing a “pregnant” woman searching for her “missing” husband, traversing the length and breadth of the city. Kahaani became the sleeper hit of the year, garnering accolades and awards.

Shortly after Kahaani’s release, Yash Raj scion Aditya Chopra had expressed interest in remaking it for a global audience. “I thought he was kidding, but obviously not…. The new script by Jose Rivera and Richard Regen is perfectly suited for the Western audience and what I am really looking forward is to see Niels direct this version. I am sure he will bring a unique vision to the Western version. I am totally excited about this!” said Ghosh.

While a “top Hollywood actress” will be signed for Vidya’s role, Deity will be shot in most Calcutta locations that Kahaani made famous pan-India: Park Street to Kalighat, Thakurpukur to Lansdowne.

“The shoot for Deity will start by early next year and continue for three months. The basic storyline has been tweaked to make it more appealing to a global audience,” said actor-director Arindam Sil whose company Nothing beyond Cinema will be handling the line production of Deity, just as it did for Kahaani.

Sil has already spoken to Mamata Banerjee about Hollywood coming calling. “The chief minister has extended her full cooperation for the shoot. It’s a proud moment for our city that a full-fledged Holly film will be shot wholly in Calcutta,” said Sil.
