Three upsets on Day Two

Guwahati, July 22: As many as three major upsets marked the second day today of the OIL-AITA Super Series under-14 and under-16 tennis tournaments under way at the All-Assam Tennis Association Complex here.

Unseeded Maharashtra girl Sanya Singh shocked second seed Yubranee Banerjee of Bengal 2-4, 4-2, 10-7 in the girls’ under-14 singles pre-quarterfinals.

The boys’ under-16 singles pre-quarters witnessed unseeded D. Suresh of Tamil Nadu upset fifth seed Arnab Bhardwaj of Haryana 1-4, 5-4 (6), 10-8 and unseeded Bengal boy Arghya Das getting the better of sixth seed Mingkhi Talom of Arunachal Pradesh 4-2, 4-2.

The day also witnessed the exit of most of the Assam players, barring under-16 girls’ top seed Priyana Kalita and Snehal Nayan in under-14 boys’ singles. Priyana got the better of statemate Tanisha Kashyap 4-1, 4-2 to book a quarter-final berth while Snehal overcame statemate Sadhinoor Jyoti 5-4(3), 5-4 (7) to make it to the last eight.

Bodousa Football: Jalen Football Ccoaching Centre, Manipur, defeated Barekuri Anchalik Krida Sangha by 3-0 goals in a match of the sixth Bodusa Cup football tournament, organised by Bodousa Sports Club in association with Dibrugarh District Sports Association, reports Avik Chakraborty from Dibrugarh.
