Douglas to coach

Calcutta: Douglas Da Silva, who used to play a stellar role in the midfield during his heydays, is set for a return to this part of the world.

The Brazilian, who turned out for both East Bengal and Bagan during the early and mid-2000, has been appointed chief coach of the Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy in Durgapur. He has been contracted for two years and is scheduled to arrive on August 4.

“My goal will be to spot the talented blokes so that they can form the senior squad. I also have to talk to Mr (Subhas) Bhowmick and other members of the support staff as to what their requirements are. “I have to work accordingly,” Douglas said from Sao Paulo.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Leo Bertos, who had played the 2010 World Cup, was named East Bengal’s marquee player for this season’s I-League. The 32-year-old attacking midfielder, was part of the Wellington Phoenix squad before signing a two-year contract with East Bengal.
