Anubrata ‘aides’ beat up cops

Suri, July 19: Trinamul workers said to be close to Birbhum party chief Anubrata Mondal allegedly assaulted three policemen and vandalised a police outpost and cars following a clash between two factions in the district today.

District police chief Alok Rajoria said: “Some people attacked policemen and the outpost (in Dubrajpur’s Lokpur). The police have started a suo motu case.”

Police sources said the officer in charge of the outpost in Lokpur, Sanjay Ghosh, and two constables were beaten up when he refused to register a kidnapping complaint after finding no merit in it.

This morning, two groups owing allegiance to local leaders Mihir Bauri, said to be close to Mondal, and Shankar Garai had clashed. Garai lodged a complaint at the outpost. Then, Bauri’s wife Bulu came to the outpost to lodge a complaint mentioning that her husband had been kidnapped.

When the police found out that Bauri was in the area, they refused to lodge a complaint, the sources said. “Bulu called Trinamul activists passing by after taking part in a procession. They assaulted the policemen,” an officer said.

Mondal, who had last year exhorted Trinamul workers to bomb the police, said: “Some people attacked the policemen and the outpost. The police will find out the culprits and action will be initiated.”
