Rally bares feud after unity call

Calcutta, July 16: Two warring factions of the Trinamul Congress in East Midnapore today held separate rallies to campaign for the party’s annual July 21 “martyrs’ day” programme, a day after Mamata Banerjee projected a united face of the district unit.

Saumitra Khan, who recently replaced MP Subhendu Adhikari as state Trinamul Youth Congress president, and actor Hiran, a Trinamul youth wing general secretary, attended a rally at Panskura called by district Trinamul Youth Congress working president Anisur Rahman.

Akhil Giri, the MLA who was appointed the working president of the Trinamul unit in East Midnapore on May 31 apparently to clip the wings of Subhendu and his father Sisir, was also present at the meeting along with minister Soumen Mahapatra and MLAs Biplab Roy Chowdhury, Amiya Bhattacharya and Siuli Saha.

At Mecheda 25km away, Subhendu’s followers held another rally to drum up support for the July 21 event. Subhendu and Sisir did not attend either of the rallies.
