Hospital under attack

A 60-strong mob beat up doctors and paramedics and damaged properties at Peerless Hospital on Tuesday evening because of alleged medical negligence. The mob later turned on the cops when they arrived on the scene. Six youths have been arrested.

“When our men reached the hospital, the mob attacked them. Many cops were injured,” said a police officer. “The mob alleged the hospital delayed releasing a patient, whose condition they said was not improving.”

Sudipto Mitra, the medical superintendent of the hospital, denied the allegation.

The patient — Samir Halder, 20 — was brought to the hospital after he had met with an accident on Sunday. “The patient had been in a coma from the moment he was brought in. When the family wanted to shift him to another hospital, we assisted in the process,” said Mitra. “The mob became violent after an ambulance carrying the patient left the hospital.”
