Quiz tests culture lore

- Questions on Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas

Ask a gizmo question to any GenY child and hear the asnwer come pat. But, what came as a big surprise on Sunday was when youngsters revealed themselves to be equally aware of India’s rich cultural history.

Singhbhum Zilla Hindi Sahitya Sammelan — a leading literary socio-cultural organisation of Jamshedpur — organised an inter-school quiz on the life and works of author of Ramcharitmanas, Tuslidas at Tulsi Bhavan in Bistupur.

The Q&A session was a part of the month-long celebrations to mark Tulsi Jayanti that falls on August 3.

Eight city schools with four members each participated in the quiz that had posers only on Tulsidas or Ramcharitmanas.

“The questions were all based on Ramcharitmanas and Tulsidas’ life. We want to make students aware of our culture and history as well as a great personality like Tulsidas,” said Yamuna Tiwary, vice-president of the outfit.

There were five rounds including an audio-visual one. At the end of the one-and-a-half-hour contest, DAV Public School, Bistupur, emerged as the winners. Ramkrihna Mission, Bistupur, and SDSM School of Excellence, Sidhgora, were the runners-up.

The students who participated had loads of fun. “Science and technology is significant, but culture too holds importance in our lives. That is why we decided to participate here,” said Abhishek Anand, who represented DAV Public School, Bistupur.

Singbhum Zilla Hindi Sahitya Sammelan has lined up an array of events to mark Tulsi Jayanti. Members will host Hanuman Sajja, where children will dress up as Lord Hanuman. The outfit also held a Hanuman Chalisa recitation competition last week.
