Chief minister Mamata Banerjee presents a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to Sana Afrin, who has secured a seat in the MSc-PhD dual-degree programme at IIT Kanpur, at an Iftar on the Park Circus Maidan on Sunday evening. Metro has highlighted the plight of Sana, who has been struggling to raise money for her studies. Sana’s father, a milkman, earns around Rs 3,000 a month.

“The chief minister ma’am told me to study hard. She said she would help me out if I faced any financial problem,” said a beaming Sana.

The Park Circus Iftar, hosted by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation, was the chief minister’s first this Ramazan. The menu included Mutton Korma, Chicken Haleem, Naan, Paratha, Firni and assortment of fruits and sweets. Mamata, who spent around 20 minutes at the gathering, ate a couple of dates and Firni.
