Teacher killed in Diphu

Nagaon, July 10: A law college clerk was abducted and a teacher was killed in Diphu — headquarters of Karbi Anglong district — during the past 24 hours.

The first incident happened last night when an office clerk of Diphu Law College was abducted by suspected militants from an interior area in the vicinity of Diphu town.

The clerk — Biren Kakoty — had left his Diphu residence in his own autorickshaw last evening. Kakoty’s family reported the matter to the police when his mobile phone was found switched off till night.

This evening, the police recovered Kakoty’s autorickshaw from an interior area near Diphu town.

The second incident was reported at 3pm today when a primary schoolteacher was gunned down in front of a training centre in the heart of Diphu town. The teacher, Sambhu Prasad Singh, 40, was brought out of the Basic Training Centre, Diphu, by an unknown youth and shot dead from close range.

According to eyewitnesses, Singh was inside the classroom when a youth approached him and told him to come out of the classroom, as he had something to discuss with him. “Singh went out and reached the BTC main gate. After talking for some time, the youth shot him dead from close range and left the site,” said a close associate of Singh.

The Hindi-speaking teacher hailed from Diphu town. He completed teacher’s eligibility test two years ago and later joined as assistant teacher in Adarsha Hindi Bidyalaya.

Though extortion is suspected to be the reason behind the killing of the schoolteacher, the police are still clueless regarding the motive till this evening.
