Tweets titter at Rs 100cr spree

New Delhi, July 10: Arun Jaitley announced some 28 Rs 100-crore schemes today, something Twitter just couldn’t get enough of.

“ArunJaitley beats all Bollywood stars in giving 100cr hits,” filmmaker Kunal Kohli tweeted.

The schemes cover areas as diverse as madarsas, a sports university, archaeological sites, a national industrial corridor, Metro railway, girls’ education and community radio.

Another tweet put words in Jaitley’s mouth: “And finally, I allocate 100 crores to manage all these countless 100 crore projects.”

A third said: “Jaitly ji should organise a 100 crore seminar to announce all 100 crore projects.”

Several schemes for girls and women were part of the budget, among them the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme that is part of the 100-crore club. A small savings scheme for the education of the girl child, improved medical aid for women and chapters on gender equality in schools have been promised.

The government also proposed Rs 150 crore for the home ministry to increase women’s safety in large cities, and Rs 50 crore for the road transport and highways ministry to pilot-test a scheme for women’s safety on public transport.

Another Rs 100-crore scheme was aimed at promoting the community radio movement, with the promise of grants for those who come up with innovative suggestions.

The scheme will sustain around 600 new and existing community radio stations.
