Two injured in firing

Ranchi, July 5: Two members of an extortion gang were allegedly injured when a rival group fired at them in Ranchi’s Bariatu today, sparking panic in the area. Five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The injured have been identified as Luvkush and Bipin Sharma. While Luvkush took a bullet on his left hand, Bipin has been hit on the back. Both have been admitted to RIMS.

According to eyewitnesses, the groups clashed on Road No. 7 in Kusum Vihar locality around 3.15pm. “They were fighting over collection of “rangdari” for settlement of a 1.25-acre plot at Chiraundi,” a local resident said.

Superintendent of police (city) Anoop Birtharay confirmed that both the groups were engaged in extortion. “Luvkush and Bipin belong to the same gang. The five arrested have been kept at Bariatu police station for interrogation,” he added.

An officer at Bariatu police station identified the five as Ashok Lakra, Deepak Mahto, Animesh Goswami, Anuj Swarnkar and Ghanshyam Ojha. “It appears that Anuj was the one to open fire. However, it is yet not clear he belongs to which gang as both groups are refusing to accept him as one of their own,” the officer said.

Ashok has blamed Bipin and Luvkush. “Bipin and Luvkush wanted commission for a land deal at Chiraundi. I was supposed to settle the matter. But when I reached the spot, both of them started fighting and beat up Anuj, who opened fire,” a police officer quoted Ashok as saying.

Police have recovered a used cartridge from the spot.
