Javadekar sends back latecomers

New Delhi, June 30: Information and broadcasting minister Prakash Javadekar today sent back around 200 secretarial staff who had arrived late to work in the ministry.

The minister was stunned to find room after room empty during a round of the ministry at Shastri Bhavan. Duty starts at 9am and the 200 rapped today made up almost half the secretarial staff.

“While senior bureaucrats were mostly present, section officers and staffers below that (rank) were not. I asked for the latecomers to be sent to me. They kept coming to me in batches of 25-30 till 10.30am. I asked them all to take casual leave,” said Javadekar.

He got the empty rooms photographed as evidence and warned such “casual approach which was okay in the previous government won’t be tolerated anymore”. Old-timers couldn’t recall so many “punished” for delay in any ministry before.

“We have generally been on toes since the new government took charge. The minister seems a very genial person, so we didn’t expect to be taken to task for reaching a few minutes late. Now we can’t take any chances,” said a section officer.
