Adhir on AIIMS

June 29: The Congress will soon start a north Bengal-wide movement demanding an AIIMS-like hospital at Panishala near Raiganj in North Dinajpur, PCC president Adhir Chowdhury said today.

The MP who attended two workers’ meets, one in Raiganj and one in Siliguri, today, said: “I wholeheartedly support the decision taken by the Congress leaders of north Bengal to organise a movement demanding an AIIMS in Raiganj. North Dinajpur is associated with Priya Ranjan Das Munshi’s name and it was after his initiative that the Centre allocated funds for the AIIMS. The state government and the chief minister are playing dirty political games and trying to shift the project to Kalyani.”

He added that: “The Congress ... will soon launch an intensive movement throughout north Bengal.”

The state has sent letters to the Centre, saying 150 acres of government land was available for the project.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her recent north Bengal visit, had said: “We would be happy to see that AIIMS is set up in north Bengal but we need land...”

Former Raiganj MP Congress’s Deepa Das Munshi, who had earlier said farmers of Panishala were willing to give land for the hospital, said: “It is because of political vengeance that the chief minister is not letting the Centre to set up the AIIMS in Raiganj.”

Today, Adhir said: “... we would ask her (Mamata) to let the first AIIMS be in Raiganj. She can make the second one in Kalyani. Recently, the government in Bihar was dilly-dallying with land needed for an Aligarh Muslim University campus in Kishenganj. People resorted to rail roko for around 30 hours to create pressure on government. If required, we can organise similar movements to ensure that the state procures land from willing people in Raiganj.”
