Didi’s AC stops, babus face heat

June 6: A divisional engineer of the state power utility is suspended after a power cut at the Jalpaiguri forest bungalow where the chief minister had put up.

June 26: Two PWD engineers suspended after an an AC malfunctioned at the Darjeeling forest bungalow where Mamata Banerjee stayed the night.

A trend of pulling the plug on officials seems to be emerging whenever Mamata runs into power disruptions.

“The chief minister got furious when the AC in her room at the Mongpong forest bungalow stopped working last evening. She spoke to Darjeeling district magistrate Puneet Yadav about it this morning. He informed the chief secretary, on whose instruction the suspension order was issued,” an official said.

Senior officials said the assistant engineer (electrical) and the sub-assistant engineer of Malbazar circle had been held responsible for the malfunctioning AC. Both are attached to the PWD.

Sources said Mamata was resting in her room when the AC stopped working. The engineers were called in. “They found that the stabiliser connected to the AC was not functioning, so the cooler was not getting power supply. The engineers suggested running the AC without the stabiliser but the security personnel did not allow it,” a source said. “A new stabiliser was brought and the problem fixed in 40 minutes.”

A forest department engineer was responsible for the bungalow’s upkeep. “If the PWD engineers were not asked to check the ACs, how are they guilty?” he said.
