Babus feel AC heat

June 6: A divisional engineer of the state electricity utility suspended after a power cut at the Jalpaiguri forest bungalow where the chief minister had put up.

June 26: Two PWD engineers suspended following an air-conditioner malfunction at the Darjeeling forest bungalow where the chief minister spent the night.

A trend of pulling the plug on officials seems to be emerging in places where Mamata Banerjee is running into power-related disruptions.

“The chief minister got furious when the AC in her room at the Mongpong forest bungalow stopped working last evening. She spoke to Darjeeling DM Puneet Yadav about it this morning. The district magistrate informed the chief secretary, on whose instructions the suspension order was issued,” an official said.

Senior officials said the assistant engineer (electrical) and the sub-assistant engineer of the Malbazar circle had been held responsible for the malfunctioning of the AC.

Sources said the chief minister was taking rest in her room after attending a programme in Alipurduar when the AC stopped functioning. The two engineers were called to check the problem.

“They found that the stabiliser connected to the AC was not functioning, as a result of which the cooler was not getting power supply. The engineers suggested that the AC be run without the stabiliser but the chief minister’s security personnel did not allow it,” a source said.

“A new stabiliser was brought and the problem fixed within 40 minutes,” he added.

An engineer said the forest department was responsible for the upkeep of the bungalow. “If the PWD engineers were not asked to check the ACs in advance, how can they be held responsible?” he said.
