Toilets for all schools in ’14

- Patel vows year-end deadline

Jamshedpur, June 25: All government-run elementary and secondary schools in Jharkhand will have toilets by December 2014, state drinking water and sanitation department minister Jai Prakash Bhai Patel said today.

Young minister and Mandu MLA of the JMM, Patel, in Jamshedpur to review his department’s project in Kolhan (twin Singhbhums and Seraikela-Kharsawan) at the district collectorate, told the media that a recent affidavit in this connection had been submitted to Jharkhand High Court in response to a PIL.

The departments of drinking water and sanitation, and welfare, will construct toilets in schools for boys and girls, respectively. But the deadline will be the same for all, the minister stressed.

According to information shared by drinking water and sanitation officials based on data collated by human resource development department, among 40,177 schools for boys, toilets are available in only 37,012 and missing in 3,165. Similarly, among 40,177 schools for girls, toilets are available in only 36,974 schools and absent in 3,203.

Studies have suggested lack of toilets is one of the main reasons for girls leaving schools.

Patel added toilet construction would be done in schools based on lists submitted by superintendents of education in respective districts.

Drinking water and sanitation engineer-in-chief D.D. Sharma, who was with the minister during the review meeting, told The Telegraph that school toilets would be built under Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan, a community-led central sanitation programme.

Patel also said the construction of the Rs 272-crore Bagbera-Govindpur piped water supply project would begin by September. He also launched 50 online mini-water supply projects for rural Kolhan.
