Undertrial flees from hospital

Tura, June 23: An undertrial United Achik Liberation Army (UALA) cadre today escaped from a government hospital in Tura.

The cadre, identified as Rex Miller R. Sangma, was arrested on June 18 from Kharkutta in the North Garo Hills, based on inputs given by another cadre, Grikseng Sangma, who was also arrested from his house in Araimile here. Both were on five-day police remand.

Miller was undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital Tura since June 20.

Additional superintendent of police of West Garo Hills, Bruno A. Sangma, said, “We have suspended seven constables, who were on duty at the hospital for negligence. Miller was an arm supplier for the UALA.”

“Miller was taken to the hospital after he complained of a stomach ailment. We have asked the hospital to submit its report as to why he was kept for so long,” said Sangma.

Quoting hospital authorities, Sangma said, “The cadre was running, when a nurse spotted him, she informed the constable at the hospital. However, they could not catch him.” The incident took place around 4am. “A departmental inquiry will be initiated against the constables, who were on duty.”

The cadre was not handcuffed, which is a not permitted according to the latest Supreme Court ruling on undertrial prisoners, who are on medication at a hospital.
