Brinda bats for jailed three, child safety

Ranchi, June 17: CPM politburo member Brinda Karat today lashed out at the Hemant Soren government for the Kerala child trafficking controversy and police goof-up of an alleged gang rape and murder case.

Speaking at the party office in Ranchi this afternoon, she told mediapersons that the government did nothing to check trafficking of children while referring to the recent detention of around 500 children, over 160 hailing from Jharkhand, at Olavakkode railway station in Palakkad.

“Though the government has announced a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the alleged trafficking, it will not be effective unless it works on a time-bound programme, arrest the guilty and weed out the problem,” she added.

On the botched-up investigations into the alleged rape and murder case, the CPM leader said: “Police arrested and put behind bars three innocent young men for raping and murdering a girl, who showed up later. The youths must be released immediately. I am going to meet their families and also the state DGP. And the actual culprits must be arrested and cases lodged against them.”

On the CPM’s Lok Sabha poll debacle in Bengal, she said that the party’s central committee had already reviewed its performance. “About one-fourth of the total 78,000 polling booths remained inaccessible to our supporters,”she alleged.

Later in the day, Karat met the family members of the three youths — Ajit, Amarjit and Abhimanyu — at Amarjit’s place and took some of them to DGP Rajeev Kumar’s office.

Kumar is learnt to have assured Karat that police would initiate the process of releasing the three tomorrow.

“The DGP also informed that action would be taken against the erring policemen. While three ASIs have been suspended for lapses, action against a DSP is also being recommended,” said CPM state secretary Gopikant Baxi, who had accompanied Karat.

The youths were arrested following the recovery of a partially burnt body of a 17-year-old about 40km from the capital on February 14.

Police said the girl was gang-raped and later murdered by her boyfriend Ajit and his friends during a Valentine’s Day date. Even her parents had identified the body and performed her last rites. While Ajit and Amarjit were arrested in February, Abhimanyu was nabbed in May.

But the girl was spotted at RIMS on Saturday and brought before police.
