Woman, cop kill selves

Jamshedpur’s suicide graph shot up to 93 with a policeman and a mentally unstable woman killing themselves in the past 24 hours.

The first incident involving a 50-year-old wireless operator of the rank of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) took place in Sakchi post midnight, while the 30-year-old woman was found dead in a well in Govindpur in the wee hours.

Ram Krishna Pathak, who consumed poison at his Old Baradwari residence, was suffering from depression ever since he was posted in rebel-hit Latehar district two years back. He left behind a suicide note, saying that he no longer wanted to live. The body was sent to MGM Medical College for post-mortem.

East Singhbhum SSP Amol V. Homkar said: “No one can remain posted at a place of his or her choice forever. If anyone gets depressed after being transferred elsewhere, that person is not fit for police service.”

In the other incident, Shanti Mishra, a resident of Gitti Machine Area in Govindpur, jumped into a well near her home around 1am. Mother of an eight-year-old boy, Shanti was suffering from mental ailments for a year.

Husband R.P. Mishra, a supervisor at a nearby crusher unit, said: “Shanti was suffering from depression. But I cannot say exactly what drove her to end her life.”
