Five killed in Bhilai plant leak

Raipur, June 12: Five employees, including two deputy general managers, were killed and more than two dozen were affected after gas leaked at the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) today evening.

The incident occurred around 6pm at the gas cleaning plant zone that was inundated when a valve of the water supply line burst. The halt in the flow of water led to the gas leak, a police officer said.

The victims were identified as B.K. Singh and N.K. Katariya, both deputy general managers; M.R. Sahu, senior operative; A. Samuel, chargeman; and Ramesh Sharma, fireman.

The plant belongs to the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).

All affected employees have been taken to the BSP hospital, where the condition of 11 persons was reported to be critical.

Jawans of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and started rescue operations, police said.

The BSP management said in a statement that the breakdown in a pump house led to the gas leak, affecting people working nearby.

Officials said that a high-level enquiry would be ordered to establish the cause of the breakdown.
