Mom takes back ‘sold’ child

Jalpaiguri, June 10: Gouri Das, the woman who had sold her child soon after delivery, took back her son from the Child Welfare Committee of Jalpaiguri district today.

Gouri had given the baby to a childless couple from Jalpaiguri town against a sum of Rs 13,000 on May 27

She has three daughters and had said poverty was reason for the deal. She had said her family runs on the alms collected by her mother.

As the issue came to light, the district administration instructed police to locate the child. The baby was traced to Hospitalpara in town.

Apu and Babli Roy, a childless couple, confirmed that they had paid Rs 13,000 to Gouri and given the baby to committee chairperson Chhaya Roy.

The committee decided to sent the child to an orphanage. Gouri was told she could claim her son Rohit in two months.

“Today, Gouri submitted an application saying she wanted her son back. We discussed the matter and the child was handed over to her,” Sudip Chakraborty, a committee member said.
