Mob torches killer bus

A mob went on the rampage in Purnea and attacked police officers after an out-of-control bus knocked a biker dead on Monday morning.

The driver of the bus, on way from Purnea to Bhagalpur, was allegedly overspeeding and lost control at Rupauli Chowk around 9am on Monday. It hit 34-year-old Dhoba resident Ravi Shankar Kumar. Police said three persons got injured and were admitted to the Purnea sadar hospital.

The accident spot was 20m away from Rupauli police station and the officers took away the bus. The driver fled. Eyewitnesses said as soon as villagers of Dhoba learnt about the accident, they rushed to Rupauli Chowk, around 350km northeast of Patna, and went on the rampage for around three hours.

Ravi was standing by the road on his bike when the out-of-control bus rammed into him at Rupauli Chowk. A post-mortem was conducted before the body was handed over to Raviís family.

Dhoba residents, seething with anger, attacked the police station and set the bus on the police station premises on fire. The police fired five rounds in the air and baton-charged the protesters to control the situation, as the people pelted the officers with stones.

Mohanpur Bazaar resident Manoj Kumar, an eyewitness to the accident, said: ďAs news of the death spread to Dhoba village, at least 5,000 villagers rushed to the police station. They wanted the police to hand over the vehicle so that they could set it on fire. After the brawl with the officers, the mob set the bus on fire.Ē

Assistant superintendent of police (also the Dhamdaha sub-divisional police officer) Dilnawaz Ahmad told The Telegraph: ďA person, identified as Dhoba resident Ravi Shankar Kumar, died in the accident. Police officers spent Rs 25,000 from their own pockets to send the injured to hospital. Since the mob attacked the police and set the bus on fire, the officers had to use mild force to control the situation. We fired in the safe zones to disperse the mob. A case has been registered and five persons have been arrested. We also recorded the whole attack on video. Once the protesters are identified, their names would be included in the FIR.Ē
