Maoist leader held

Ranchi, June 5: A CPI(Maoist) area commander and his aide were arrested from different parts of West Singhbhum district today. A pistol, cartridges and a mobile phone were recovered from them.

Maoist Sudarshan Chaki (30) was arrested early this morning following a tip-off received last night. On the basis of Sudarshan’s submission, Naxalite area commander Siwon Singh Chaki was arrested from a forest near Kerabir in Sonuwa later in the day.

“We received information about Sudarshan around 9pm yesterday and formed a special team to catch him alive. The operation began at 6am today,” said SP Narendra Kumar Singh.

The SP added that Sudarshan had been living in a hut build on railway land in Chakradharpur area and used to extort money from contractors and businessmen.

Later, Sudarshan disclosed Siwon’s hideout in Kerabir. “When security forces surrounded the spot, the area commander surrendered without any resistance,” the senior cop said.

During interrogations, Siwon said he was introduced to Prasadji, alias Krishna Ahir, around eight years ago. Initially, he used to stick posters and write Maoist slogans on walls and would get Rs 3,000 per month. Gradually, he became an active member of the squad and went on to become an area commander.

Siwon also confessed that his was involved in around 20 cases registered at various police stations of the district. His squad had ambushed a police patrol on June 10, 2009, in Chitirghati area, killing then officer-in-charge of Goelkera police station Philip Tete and seven jawans. He also blew up a guest house in Sonuwa area on October 10, 2009.
