Telangana loan sop

Hyderabad, June 4: Telangana chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao today announced a waiver of up to Rs 1 lakh on loans taken by farmers in 2013-14.

The measure, mentioned in the ruling TRS’s manifesto, will benefit 23 lakh farmers who had borrowed around Rs 12,000 crore. Rao also said the new state would have 24 districts instead of the existing 10 to ensure better governance.

Heat wave

Vadodara (PTI): Three persons have died in Vadodara from heat wave with the mercury hovering around 42C in the past 24 hours, police said. The temperature hit 44C in some other parts of Gujarat on Tuesday, the Met department said.

Crash claim

New Delhi (PTI): A motor accident claims tribunal in Delhi has awarded over Rs 15 lakh to a vegetable vendor who suffered 85 per cent disability in his left leg after being hit by a rashly driven bus in 2008. Sukhram, 55, was selling vegetables on his cart when the bus hit him. He underwent treatment for eight months in AIIMS, after which his left leg was removed.

Vadodara (PTI): The western railway has agreed to reduce the speed of trains passing through tracks near Gujarat’s Gir forest to prevent Asiatic lions from being run over, a forest official has said.

Senior shield

Thane (PTI): Beat marshals in all police stations in Thane have been handed a list of senior citizens under their jurisdiction to ensure their safety, police said. The police have contacted banks to ensure there are separate queues for them, among other facilities.

Jumbo birth

Udhagamandalam (PTI): A 23-year-old female elephant, captured a year ago after it strayed into habitations in Thiruvannamalai, delivered a male calf on Wednesday in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve near Udhagamandalam, forest department sources said. The total number of elephants in the reserve has gone up to 28 with the birth.
