Dhubri, June 1: An FIR was lodged by the maternal uncle of a 16-year-old girl in Amco Bazar police outpost last night against two persons who allegedly raped his niece on the night of May 30.
The uncle, who works as a watchman in a veneer and plywood factory in ward 12 of Dhubri town, alleged that his niece was forcefully picked up from her house and taken to a nearby house of the accused. She was then raped by the duo.
The uncle stays with his family in a room provided by the mill owner. His niece lives with them when she comes from Grahampur in search of work during the harvest season every year, a family source said. The source said the victim studies in Class IX and because of acute poverty she usually comes to her maternal uncle’s house and earns as a daily labourer.
On the night of May 30, the two men broke into the room and picked her up at knife point while her uncle was out for work on the other side of the mill, the source added.
Local residents came to know about the incident yesterday. They mounted pressure on the police to inquire into the matter, when they failed to convince the mill owner to persuade the watchman (uncle) to lodge an FIR.
The in-charge officer of Amco police outpost, Saidul Rahman, said a case had been registered against the two and a search was on for them. Medical tests on the victim were done and her statement has been recorded. “We have opened all our channels and activated the networks to catch the accused. Hopefully, they will be arrested soon.”
