Situation in Bengal today worse than it was under Left, says BJP’s Naqvi

Calcutta, May 31 (PTI) : The Bharatiya Janata Party, some of whose supporters were assaulted last week, alleged on Saturday that the law and order situation in West Bengal was worse than it was under the Left rule.

“The condition of West Bengal is worse than it was under the Left regime. The way the ruling party is using official machinery to terrorise and bully opposition party workers is condemnable,” Muqtar Abbas Naqvi, the BJP’s vice-president and a Rajya Sabha member, told reporters here after arriving with four other senior party leaders.

”We have come here to assess the situation arising out of attacks on party workers and submit a report to the central party leaders,” Naqvi said.

The team will visit Sandeshkhali in North 24-Parganas and also the SSKM hospital here, where 30 BJP workers with gun shot wounds from Sandeshkhali have been admitted.

Rahul Sinha, the BJP’s state unit chief, said they would later go in a deputation to the Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra.

Alleged Trinamool Congress workers had attacked over BJP workers at Sandeshkhali on May 28, leaving 30 injured. Four persons have so far been arrested in this connection.

The BJP and CPI(M) had observed a 12-hour bandh in the area on Thursday.

Besides Naqvi, other members of the team are Siddharth Nath Singh, who is in charge of the state, and three members of Parliament --S.S. Ahluwalia, Meenakshi Lekhi and Babul Supriyo. Lekhi is also the BJP spokesperson.
