Junior cricketers suspended

Guwahati, May 29: The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) today suspended a junior cricketer, Anup Bhujel, of Guwahati for two months for fudging his age while representing City Cricket Coaching Centre (CCCC) here in the ongoing Dilip Sarmah Trophy inter-district inter-coaching centre (under-14) cricket tournament here.

Bhujel will not be able to participate in any ACA tournament during the suspension period. The ACA has also barred CCCC from playing further in the tournament on charges of allowing a player to fudge age in an ACA tournament, confirmed ACA secretary Bikash Baruah.

Baruah said the player has admitted before the tournament committee that he was 15 years old and has cleared the HSLC examinations this year. The tournament is an under-14 event, organised to tap talent for grooming to represent the state in the junior level.

Nagaon Cricket Coaching Centre had lodged a complaint against the CCCC for fielding Bhujel in the match between the two sides on Tuesday which the latter won with the help of Bhujel’s all-round performance. Nagaon CCC were declared winners of the match after their allegation proved true. “We were requested by a section of guardians of the players of CCCC to allow the team, without Bhujel, to in the tournament. However, we could not do so because we had earlier taken a similar action against Nazira for fielding an overaged player in the JK Baruah Trophy under-19 inter-district tournament recently and there cannot be a separate set of rules for this tournament,” Baruah said.
