Rural body worker shot

Raiganj, May 26: An employee of a gram panchayat office was shot dead by bike-borne youths in Kamalabari this morning, while going to work.

Pradip Roy, 36, was riding his motorbike to go to the Kamalabari gram panchayat office, around 30km from here, when he was shot around 11am today.

Local people took his body to the Hemtabad block hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The police are yet to identify the miscreants and are not sure about the motive behind the murder.

A police source said Roy had been shot at point blank range in the head and chest. He had joined the gram panchayat office three months ago as an overseer.

Nemai Mondol, an eyewitness, said: “It had rained and I was busy preparing my field for paddy. I saw a man was riding a motorbike towards Kamalabari. There were three motorbikes with five men coming from the opposite side. I resumed my work and suddenly heard loud sounds. I looked up to see the three motorbikes speeding away and a youth lying on the road bleeding heavily.”

“ I raised the alarm and others who were also working in the fields came rushing. We arranged a mini van and took the man to the block hospital where the doctors said he was dead,” said Mondol.

The deputy police superintendent of the district intelligence branch, Sujit Ghosh, said: “The planned murder of a government employee is a serious matter. We are investigating the case and no one has been arrested as yet.”
