India Club claim title

Hailakandi, May 25: India Club won the first Jahar Raha Football Championship defeating hosts Sporting Club 5-4 via tiebreaker in the final at Sporting Club ground in Silchar yesterday.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after the stipulated time.

Ramrel Hmar fashioned the lead for India Club in the 20th minute, which was equalised by Sporting’s Paijan Rongmei in 39th minute.

Sporting’s Paijan Rongmei, Ringson Hmar and Kaguigai Rongmei found the net in the penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Pappu Chakraborty brilliantly saved the shots by Howrailong Rongmei and Manoj Rajkonwar. Pappu also saved two definite goals earlier in the first half of the match.

India Club’s goals in the tiebreaker were scored by Abraham Hmar, Malingir Halam, Kamrul Islam and Thalin Singha.

Thalin Singha was adjudged the Man of the Final. The prizes were given away by executive director of Dainik Jugasankha Nilotpal Choudhury and District Sports Association, Silchar, secretary Babul Hore, among others.

In the semi-finals on Friday, Sporting Club won the first semi-final calling the toss of a coin right after the match ended in a 2-2 draw in the stipulated time. The tiebreaker too failed to break the deadlock as it ended in a 3-3 draw and in the sudden death, it ended 3-3.

Town Club took the lead in the 33rd minute through Rela Mija. Piya Mija scored the second goal in the 37th minute. Paijan Rongmei and Joy Kamei drew parity scoring in the 45th and 62nd minutes.

In the second semi-final, India Club defeated Tarapur Athletic Club 2-1. Tarapur AC took the lead in the 12th minute through Ajmir Hussain Laskar. India Club equalised through Mansingir Halam in the 33rd minute. Halam scored the match-winning goal in the 56th minute.
