Medic found dead in hostel

May 25: A Purulia girl studying MBBS in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon was found hanging in her hostel room last night and a note found on the floor blamed “harassment” by her three roommates.

Priyanka Mukherjee, daughter of a surgeon in Purulia town, was supposed to write her first-year final exams at Ulhas Patil Medical College in Jalgaon from Tuesday.

Narayan Avrekar, the dean of the medical college, said the three girls mentioned in the piece of paper found in the room have been detained.

“Police are questioning everybody. Priyanka never indicated she was unhappy with the behaviour of her roommates. Had we known there was some problem among them, we would have allotted her another room,” Avrekar said.

Sources in the institute said Priyanka’s roommates had gone out yesterday evening and found the door of their room bolted from inside on their return. When repeated knocks on the door failed to get any response, the girls called the matron and fellow students.

The police were informed and they broke open the door to find Priyanka hanging from the ceiling fan.

“The girl left a suicide note in the room. The note said she committed suicide because she was unable to bear the harassment by her roommates,” said BJP MLA and Maharashtra’s leader of the Opposition Eknath Khadse, a resident of Jalgaon.

Asked about the case, Purulia police chief N. Sudhirkumar said: “I have spoken to my counterpart in Jalgaon. He told me that Priyanka has committed suicide.”

Priyanka’s father Nayan Mukherjee, a surgeon at Deben Mahato Sadar Hospital in Purulia town, said he had left for Jalgaon along with his wife and brother, and they were expected to reach tomorrow.
