A dream innings: Gautam

Calcutta: Gautam Gambhir is a seasoned campaigner in Indian cricket. He has himself played some brilliant innings in some of the biggest moments of Indian cricket, be it the inaugural World T20 final in 2007 or the World Cup final in 2011.

But on Saturday, Gambhir — the Kolkata Knight Riders captain — was witness to something that was, by his own admission, ‘unbelievable’.

“I have never seen this kind of hitting in my life and I don’t think I would see many more like this ever again in future. Unbelievable hitting!” said Gambhir after the match.

An otherwise stoic Gambhir was ecstatic when he said, “It was a dream innings. I could have only dreamt of it, but I am fortunate that I could see that today in front of my eyes. It still has not sunk in.”

Gambhir maintained that the KKR always wanted to clinch the second spot. “There was no doubt… We always wanted to finish in 15.2 overs… it was always there in our mind.

“This is what we play for. We weren’t thinking about losing the match because that wouldn’t have mattered much.”

A complete team man, Gambhir maintained that even though there were a few negatives in their performance on Saturday at the jam-packed Eden, it wasn’t the right time to go into introspection. Rather, it was time to celebrate the win and marvel at the way it was clinched.
